What is Polyester Textured Yarn?
Polyester Textured Yarn is a type of synthetic yarn that has been treated with special processes to mimic the appearance of natural fibers. These processes create loops, coils, crimps or crinkles in individual yarn fibers. The resulting textile is often stronger, softer, more water-resistant, and more durable than plain, smooth, and untreated fibers.
Textured Yarns - What They Are and How They're Made
Most textured yarns are manufactured by twisting and drawing a polyester POY (Polyester Partially Oriented Yarn) filament into a series of loops, coils, and crimps. These loops, coils, and crimps increase structure, tensile strength, elasticity, bulk, and stretchability in the yarn. The resulting fabric is usually easier to clean and maintain than a plain, untreated fiber, making it a popular choice for many types of applications.
Texturized polyester yarns may be available in various deniers and lusters, or they can be dope-dyed to achieve a variety of colors. The dyeing process can improve the dimensional stability and wear resistance of the finished product, as well as the overall look and feel of the knitted item.
Different Types of Textured Yarn
Depending on the desired effect, a yarn's texture can be a function of its "ply count" or its number of individual strands. A tighter ply count tends to have more definition, while a looser ply count can create a fuzzier effect with less visible stitches.
Some textured yarns can also be created by altering the spinneret's diameter or how the filaments are cut and spun. This can result in a completely new, unique, and exciting type of textured yarn.
Another common way that manufacturers use textured polyester yarns is to combine them with other fibers, like acrylic or natural fibers, to make the final product stronger and more durable. Blends of polyester with other fibers are used to make sweaters and jackets, baby clothing, blankets, hats, and more. These projects hold their shape well (as opposed to 100% cotton, which would sag and droop).
Textured polyester yarns can also be created by blending them with other fibers that have natural properties, such as elastane or spandex. These blended yarns are lighter and softer than plain, untreated yarns but still have strong elasticity, making them a great choice for kids' apparel, baby items, and other knitted garments that will be worn and washed frequently.
How a Textured Yarn is Made
The manufacturing of polyester textured yarns begins with a chemically treated polyester polymer, which is mixed with an organic liquid and forced through a spinneret. The polyester liquid congeals into long, thin filaments, which are then twisted and drawn in a machine to develop a desired texture.
There are a variety of different ways to create a texture in a yarn, from air streams that make the filaments in a yarn tangle together to high pressure that forms loops and crimps. This can change the texture of a yarn from a solid, matte finish to a fuzzy, hairy look.
Polyester POY Bright Yarn
Polyester POY Bright Yarn (Trilobal Bright POY Yarn)
POY (POLYESTER YARN) is available in various kinds of lustrousness like Full-Dull POY, Semi-Dull POY and Bright POY.
In order to eliminate the luster of the fiber, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) was added into the melt spinning process. POY yarn without TiO₂, it is considered as Bright filament POY (or Tri-lobal Bright yarn). If 0.3% TiO₂ is added, it is called semi-dull filament POY. And if TiO₂ added is more than 0.3%, it is considered as full-dull filament POY. And therefore, the polyester bright yarn looks more shine than semi-dull or full-dull yarns in the light. The fabric made from Bright POY also has the bright luster.
